IWG6 Developing Action Research

This workgroup will work in conjunction with a local university or research school to develop skills in applying evidence based research in Maths into practice. The programme will develop teachers  understanding on how to critically analyse research to make a judgement about its validity and how to assess research to make a judgement about its reliability. The workgroup will also focus on how to plan for the implementation of research and how to evaluate the impact of their research.

Who is this for?

Teachers across the primary and secondary phase who have identified a particular challenge
which they need to overcome in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

What is involved?

3 x face to face workshops with the work group lead(s)

Gap tasks to gauge a baseline and develop practice

Contribution to the online communities

Contribution to evaluate the impact of the programme

Intended Outcomes

Professional learning
Teachers will understand how to critically analysing research to make a judgement about its
validity.
Teachers will  understand how to assess research to make a judgement about its reliability.
Teachers will select research with a clear rationale based on the needs of their setting.
Teachers will understand how to plan for the implementation of research.
Teachers will understand how to evaluate the impact of their research.

Practice development
Teachers and leadership teams of the workgroup schools will no longer seek to implement
research without taking it on face value.

School policy

The positive findings of the research will be implemented into school policy to meet the needs
of the setting.

Pupil Outcomes
Pupils will benefit from the school using research based evidence effectively.
More specific pupil outcomes will vary depending on the nature of the research that the school
will adopt.

Expectations of participants and their schools

All participants are expected to attend all the sessions and complete gap tasks in their schools between the sessions. They will also be asked to keep a learning log for their own use and contribute to the national evaluation process, probably through a short online survey after the Work Group has finished.

This programme is provided at no cost to the school.

Dates are yet to be confirmed, however to express interest in the Developing Action Research programme please contact helen.hunter@ntlp.org.uk
