Make A Difference To The Teaching and Learning of Maths In Your Secondary School

21/03/2019 to 21/03/2019

We would like to invite Headteachers and Heads of Maths Departments from Middle and Secondary schools, to an informal meeting that will help to make a difference to the teaching and learning of maths in your school.

The Great North Maths Hub receives substantial government funding to enable schools, departments and teachers to work together to improve maths pedagogy and learning.  Your school is entitled to benefit from this funding, and can start that process by attending one of our information events on Thursday 21st March.  We would be delighted to welcome you and talk to you about the projects and training that you can access.

  • 8am – 10am at The George Washington Hotel, High Usworth, Washington, NE37 1PH or
  • 3.30pm – 5.30pm at Holiday Inn, Great North Road, Seaton Burn, Newcastle upon Tyne NE13 6BP

Many primary schools across their region are developing their maths pedagogy, with a particular focus on the 5 big ideas: Coherence; Representation and Structure; Mathematical Thinking;Fluency and Variation.  They are either taking part in the mastery readiness programme, or are involved in a local teacher research group to look at aspects of maths teaching that develop deep learning and understanding.  Maths Hubs are keen to ensure that secondary schools are aware of the developments that are taking place in Primary Mathematics, and have enough information to consider aspects of these practices that could be adapted and used to great effect in Key Stages 3 and 4.

As part of the national agenda for mathematics development, Maths Hubs were set up to enable effective local development of a mastery curriculum in mathematics.   We have been working successfully on this, with a focus on Primary Mathematics, for four years.  We now need work with our secondary colleagues and schools to raise awareness and understanding of the teaching for mastery philosophy, adopted in many Primary schools nationally.  We have secondary mastery specialists who are currently teaching in schools in this area, and they have a remit from the Department for Education to start their outreach work with local schools to develop their practice.  This could be the right time for you and your school to consider developing your mathematics pedagogy.

Please email laura.greener@ntlp.org.uk to confirm your attendance at either George Washington Hotel (8am – 10am) or Holiday Inn (3.30pm – 5.30pm).
