Developing A Level Pedagogy

15/01/2019 to 15/01/2019 9:30am - 4.00 pm

This project will provide support for developing the quality of teaching in response to the demands of the new specifications for A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Run in partnership with the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP), this work group will aim to develop existing A Level pedagogy and support development of the requirements of the new A Levels and understand the purpose of the overarching themes in departments.

Participants will gain confidence in leadership in departments and in developing the overarching themes of the new A Levels.

Who is this for?

People leading development of mathematics teaching and learning in departments with A Level provision and other experienced A Level teachers. For Day 1, this would be Heads or Deputy Heads of Department, KS5 Coordinators, Programme Managers or Course Leaders or others with a similar role. For Days 2-4, this could be the above alongside other colleagues from the department dependent on experience and identified needs in the department. This is not a subject knowledge development programme.

 What is involved?

Through face to face Work Group meeting days participating leaders of A Level teaching (and departmental colleagues on subsequent days to Day 1) will develop their practice to effectively plan sequences of lessons which meet the requirements of the new A level, raise awareness in students of the links between mathematical topics within the new A level content and support colleagues in their own schools/colleges in embedding themes from the course in their planning and delivery of new A level teaching.

The programme runs over a series of dates:

  • Tuesday 15th January 2019 9.30am – 4pm at Durham County Cricket Club, DH3 3QR
  • Tuesday 12th February 2019 – Twilight Venue tbc
  • Thursday 28th March 2019 – 9.30am – 4pm Venue tbc
  • TBC – Mid June 2019 – Twilight Venue tbc

Venues for subsequent dates will be agreed once we know the locations of the participants to ensure accessible to all.

 Intended Outcomes

  • Participant leaders of A Level teaching and teachers will:-
    • know the requirements of the new A level Mathematics
    • understand the purpose of the overarching themes
    • be confident in teaching new aspects of pedagogy

Schools and colleges of participant teachers will:-

    • improve the capacity of staff to teach A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
    • see students develop a more joined-up view of the subject and be better prepared for the new style of exams

Expectations of participants and their schools

  • Attend face to face Work Group meetings, up to four days (leaders of A Level teaching).
  • Day 1 is aimed at leading A Level teaching and Days 2 – 4 relate to the overarching themes of the new A Levels.
  • Partake in further in-school activity, for example, further departmental professional development.
  • Contribute to Work Group evaluation processes.
