Differentiation in Math teaching is at the top of many schools’ agendas and is a hot topic of discussion, particularly as more schools consider working in a mixed attainment environment, and developing Mastery Pedagogy to help every child succeed.
This workgroup, aimed at Teachers from KS1, 2 and 3, will be led by Laura Tullock, Deputy Head at Monkhouse Primary School and Teaching for Mastery Lead for the Great North Maths Hub. It offers an introduction to the principles and strategies that allow teachers to support struggling learners, and challenge more able learners through rich tasks, to ensure they progress at the same pace and are given opportunity to access on many levels, within whole class, mixed ability setting. Participants will explore how teachers can vary their lesson for differentiation and will come away with useful ideas and practices that they can apply in the classroom.
The workgroup will meet on 3 dates with a gap task carried out after each. Gap tasks will require participants to develop experience of running a mixed ability classroom through observation and practice, using approaches that have been discussed within the workgroup. The final task will involve them writing these experiences up as a case study, to share through our various communication channels.
